Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative side as a child due to her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked in the evening shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt showed it to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's example how art could serve as an instrument for activism. DuVernay had an aunt who was aware of her social circle and showed her how to use art as a method of expressing herself. Although DuVernay lived living in Compton with her family she lived at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer months and was inspired to create a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990, she completed her studies at the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood, California. DuVernay began producing television news when she was just a young student. DuVernay began her career as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked examine the garbage inside the house of a member on the jury. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Additionally, she started a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
